The University of Alberta Students’ Union (UASU) congratulates Mayor Andrew Knack and the new City Council on their election. The UASU would also like to extend our sincere thanks to Mayor Amarjeet Sohi and the outgoing City Council for their years of service and dedication to Edmonton and post-secondary students.

With more than 110,000 post-secondary students living in Edmonton, students are an essential part of the city’s present and future. The UASU ran a non-partisan Get Out the Vote Campaign to encourage students to vote, and we saw high engagement. This election will have a lasting impact on students' career skills and community engagement.

“Edmonton’s students are the future of this city. We are excited to work with Mayor Knack and Council to make Edmonton an affordable and welcoming place where students can thrive,” said Abdul Abbasi, UASU Vice President (External).

The UASU looks forward to collaborating with Mayor Knack and the City Council on key student priorities, including affordable housing, reliable and safe transit, and expanding the Leisure Access Pass to full-time post-secondary students.

The UASU also looks forward to working with Mayor Knack and the City Council to develop more initiatives like the Downtown Student Housing Incentive, which was a vital step toward creating more affordable housing options for students in Edmonton.

“From volunteering for candidates to supporting the Get Out The Vote campaign, many students played an active role in shaping Edmonton’s direction,” said Pedro Almeida, UASU President. “We look forward to working with the City Council to ensure students are represented in decisions that affect their lives.”

The UASU remains committed to ensuring student voices are heard in municipal decision-making.
