There are a couple of things you’ll need to do before you vote, and a few ways that you can actually cast your vote to make your voice heard in this municipal election. We’ve broken it down into 3 easy steps!

Step 1: Check your eligibility and register

You are eligible to vote in the 2025 Edmonton Election if you are:

  • 18 or older
  • A Canadian citizen
  • Live in Edmonton on Election Day, and have that location as your listed place of residence.

If you have voted before in an Edmonton election, or you completed the online registration before it closed in August, all you’ll need to do is show valid ID (like your Alberta driver’s license, Alberta ID card, or other accepted ID) at the voting station in order to vote.

If this is your first time voting in an Edmonton election, or your information has changed since the last election, you can still register or update your info with your valid ID at your assigned voting station during advance voting (October 7-11), on Election Day (October 20), or through a special ballot.

If you’re not able to provide an accepted form of ID, an authorized individual can complete an attestation form on your behalf to confirm your identity and place of residence. This form should be completed before you visit your assigned voting station, unless the person signing it is coming with you.

Step 2: Find your ward and candidate information

Edmonton has 12 municipal electoral wards, each represented by a city councillor. The ward boundaries are designed to keep the number of residents in each ward roughly even across the city for the most effective representation on city council.

To find your ward, you can visit the Edmonton Elections website to search by your registered address from the drop-down menu. Your search results will include the name of your ward and an Indigenous pronunciation guide, as well as identify the Catholic and public school board wards for your area.

Once you know which ward you’re in, be sure to check the nominated candidate list to see who is running to represent you! Click the plus symbol next to a candidate’s name to learn even more, like which municipal party they’re in, their website, and contact info.

If you want to hear directly from the candidates hoping to be your new mayor, we’re hosting a Mayoral Forum on October 10, 2025 in the Horowitz Theatre (starting 5PM) brought to you by the Edmonton Student Alliance! This is your opportunity to ask questions, learn where these candidates stand, and make an informed vote.

Step 3: Vote!

There are three options to cast your vote in this municipal election: special ballot, advance voting, and Election Day voting. Keep reading to learn more.

Vote by special ballot - in person or by mail!

Special ballot voting is a great option for anyone who is unable to vote during advance voting (Oct 7-11) or on Election Day (Oct 20). Common reasons include being out of town, having limited access to transportation, working at a voting station during advance voting or on Election Day, or even religious reasons like celebrating Diwali on Election Day. Special ballots can be submitted by mail or in person at the Edmonton Elections office.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Apply for a Special Ballot. You can request a special ballot package through an online request form, by email, by phone, as well as visiting the Elections office in-person. If you are not already registered to vote, you can register as part of your special ballot application by submitting a copy of accepted ID. Requests to get your special ballot by mail must be made by October 13 at 4:30 PM.
  2. Complete the package. Your special ballot package will include ballots for all races you have selected to vote in, along with detailed instructions and a statement form. You’ll need to fill out each ballot according to the instructions provided, and sign the statement form in the presence of another elector who will be your witness. Finally, include a copy of your accepted ID.
  3. Submit your special ballot. Your special ballot package will come with return instructions and a prepaid return envelope. To be accepted, your ballot must be received by Edmonton Elections no later than 7PM on Election Day (Oct 20). You can return your special ballot by mail using the prepaid envelope, or in-person to the Edmonton Elections office (16304 114 Ave NW) during business hours.
Vote in advance

Want to vote early and just get it out of the way? Skip the long lines on Election Day? Advance voting in this Edmonton Election is happening from October 7-11, 2025! Visit the Edmonton Elections website and enter your registered address to find your advance voting station and its available hours, as well as basic ward information. Remember to bring your valid ID with you to vote and/or register your info.

Vote on Election Day

Whether you just like the energy of a polling station on Election Day, or you want the maximum amount of time to consider who to vote for, your last chance to cast your vote in this Edmonton Election is October 20 by 8PM! Visit the Edmonton Elections website and enter your registered address to find your Election Day voting station and general ward information. Remember to bring your valid ID with you to vote and/or register your info.

And that’s it! We hope that this helps you feel more knowledgeable about how to cast your vote in this Edmonton election. Don’t miss our other post about what your mayor and city councillors do, and why it’s important for students to participate in municipal elections!
