May 16, 2025 — The University of Alberta Students' Union (UASU) welcomes the appointment of Myles McDougall as Alberta's new Minister of Advanced Education. Representing over 37,000 students, the UASU is eager to work with Minister McDougall on the most pressing challenges facing post-secondary education. Low-income Albertans' access to education is declining, and Alberta's student-aged population is growing rapidly — an estimated 40% between 2021 and 2035.

The UASU recognizes Rajan Sawhney's two years of service as Minister of Advanced Education. "We have appreciated Minister Sawhney's honest and engaged communication, her investments in enrolment expansion and campus upgrades, and especially her decision to reject exceptional tuition increases last Fall," said UASU Vice President (External) Abdul Abbasi.

"However, it is clear that post-secondary education is still undervalued at a critical time," said UASU President Pedro Almeida. "We hope the appointment of Minister McDougall, as a former President of the University of Calgary Students’ Union, will bring fresh attention and the funding that reflects this sector's impact and potential."

The UASU hopes to see measures that recognize value and unlock growth, including:

— Funding institutions based on enrolment and program diversity, which would account for the incredible innovation that comes out of research-intensive institutions.

— Protecting students from unnecessary and excessive cost increases:

      — Maintaining the 2% domestic tuition cap.

      — Ensuring student association consent is required for exceptional tuition increases; and holding institutions accountable for the quality-improvement commitments that justify these proposals.

      — Regulating large fees that fall through the gaps of the Tuition and Fees Regulation.

We thank Minister Sawhney for her committed service and we look forward to working with her in her new role as the Minister of Indigenous Relations. Alongside our counterparts across Alberta's post-secondary institutions, we are eager to engage with Minister McDougall as we continue to find ways to improve the post-secondary experience of Albertan students.
