Whether you’re looking to build skills, try new things, make friends, or just fill your time this year, we wrote this guide to show you how easy it is to get involved. There are many different ways for you to find your niche, help improve campus, or make a difference in your community. As a bonus, having a history of volunteerism, work experience, or awards for your involvement are all excellent ways to enhance your resume and stand out in interviews! Here’s our list to help you find great opportunities this year (and get recognized for your efforts).

1) Run for governance

Student executives like your UASU President and Vice-Presidents, and faculty representatives on Students’ Council guide the direction of your Students’ Union, and the services, business and initiatives your UASU runs to improve your student life. They play a seriously important role in student advocacy to university administration, and all levels of government. If you’re interested in representing your peers and advocating for a better student experience, you should definitely run for governance!

2) Join a student group

With over 450 student-run organizations on campus, there’s bound to be one that fits your hobbies or interests, academic goals, and more. Groups are a great way to connect with like-minded people on campus, make new friends, try new things, and build important skills that can help you in your studies or in your future career. And if the group you’re looking for doesn’t already exist, you can even start your own! Head to BearsDen to find your perfect student group match!

3) Work or volunteer (on or off campus)

Build up your resume by making a difference in your community. Your UASU recruits for student employment and volunteer opportunities throughout the year. You could work for us at Dewey’s, support students at InfoLink Help Desks around campus, or find a great summer job. UASUevents, Safewalk, the Peer Support Centre, and many other UASU initiatives all recruit volunteers at different times of the year. Check uasu.ca/jobs often to see current opportunities.

Want to volunteer your time somewhere off campus? Check the volunteer registry to see volunteer opportunities in your community.

4) Fund your incredible ideas

Students have great ideas for making our campus more sustainable, but often lack the financial support to make it happen. The SCF Green Fund exists to empower students and student group visions of sustainability by offering up to $10,000 per eligible student project–turning ideas into reality! Apply in the Fall or Winter semesters to see if your great idea is eligible for funding.

5) Get rewarded with UASU Awards

Do you want some extra cash in your pocket for all your hard work? The UASU Awards program recognizes more than your GPA. With over 90 awards, UASU Awards recognize the various student achievements and contributions made in our community in a variety of interests, including social justice and activism, leadership in sports, involvement in the arts, and perseverance in moments of hardship. UASU Involvement, Centenary, and Student Group Awards are managed by students, for students, and over half are reserved for students in financial need. Applications typically open every April.

So get out there, find your niche, and start making a difference on campus or the wider community this semester!
