As a student-run organization, the University of Alberta Students’ Union student leaders are elected annually to represent the 35,000+ undergrads at the University of Alberta and guide our efforts for the coming year.
Your UASU holds three elections throughout the year:
- The General Election in the Winter to fill the UASU’s President, Vice President, and Board of Governors representative positions;
- The Students’ Council and General Faculties Council Election in the Winter to elect student reps from each Faculty;
- The By-Election in the Fall to fill vacancies on Students’ Council and the General Faculties Council.
Voting in these elections helps to determine how your voice is heard by the University and your UASU on the issues that matter to you most.
If you want to run in one of these positions, you’ll need to put together a nomination package (available during each election season). Here’s a quick breakdown of what’s in it:
Part A: Essential Forms
You'll need to read and understand all parts of the nomination package, but Part A is the only one you need to complete and submit by the nomination deadline (which is also listed in Part A). Here you'll find contact information for the Elections Office, and three forms to complete. You'll need to provide:
- Your name and contact info, the position you’re running for, your student ID number, your primary volunteer’s contact details (if you have one), and a few other things.
- A signed letter from your Faculty proving that you are in good academic standing. It can take a few days to get this letter signed and returned, so it’s best to reach out to your Faculty Student Service office early in the process of filling out your nomination pack! A current Faculty contact list is included in Part A.
- The names, faculties, years, signatures, and student ID numbers of 50 to 100 UAlberta undergraduates who support your nomination! Signatures can be collected physically or online through Google Forms, Excel or other online platforms, and then submitted in a single file. If you are running for Students’ Council or the General Faculties Council, these signatures must be from students currently registered in your same Faculty. If you are running to represent Open Studies on these Councils, you are not required to provide signatures.
Part B: Campaign Rules and Election Dates
This section of the nomination package gives you a quick overview of general information about the election, including important dates and deadlines for the election and your campaign, as well as rules to follow as you campaign (like spending limits and volunteer conduct) and the penalties for breaking them. It’s your responsibility to read this section carefully!
Part C: Bylaws and Regulations
The final part of the nomination package is a copy of all Bylaws and relevant Regulations associated with the election. These bylaws are rules that you and your volunteers will have to follow while campaigning, so be sure to read them over carefully. If you have any questions, the Elections Office will be happy to help! (Their contact info is in Part A.)
The General Election is happening March 5-6, 2025, and you should definitely run! Nomination packs are due by 6:00 PM on February 13, and can either be submitted online or printed and dropped off at 2-900 SUB! (Don't forget: your nomination is not complete until all forms and the $50 deposit are received.)
