As a student-run organization, the University of Alberta Students’ Union student leaders are elected annually to represent the 35,000+ undergrads at the University of Alberta and guide our efforts for the coming year.

Your UASU holds three elections throughout the year:

  • The General Election in the Winter to fill the UASU’s President, Vice President, and Board of Governors representative positions;
  • The Students’ Council and General Faculties Council Election in the Winter to elect student reps from each Faculty;
  • The By-Election in the Fall to fill vacancies on Students’ Council and the General Faculties Council.

Voting in these elections helps to determine how your voice is heard by the University and your UASU on the issues that matter to you most.

If you want to be the voice of your student community in one of these positions, you’ll need to put together a nomination package (available at the link above during each election season). Here’s a quick breakdown of what’s in it:

General Information

First, you’ll see all of the general information about the election. This section includes important dates and deadlines for the election and your campaign, elections staff contact info for when you have questions, as well as rules to follow as you campaign and the penalties for breaching them. It’s important to read this section carefully!

Candidate Information and Declaration

Next, you’ll find the Candidate Information and Declaration form. This mandatory section is where you’ll provide all of the basic information needed for your candidacy. It includes your name, the position you’re running for, your student ID number, your primary volunteer’s contact details (if you have one), and a few other things.

Faculty Letter

To be eligible to run, you’ll need a letter from your Faculty proving that you are in good academic standing. Keep in mind that it might take a few days to get this letter signed and returned, so it’s best to reach out to your Faculty Student Service office early in the process of filling out your nomination pack! A current Faculty contact list will be included in the nom pack.

Signatures

The final thing you will need to provide in your nomination pack is a List of Nominators (ie. signatures)! Your nominators must be University of Alberta undergraduate students. Their signatures can be collected physically or online through Google Forms, Excel or other online platforms, and then submitted in a single file. Signatures must include the students’ names, Faculties, years of study and student ID numbers. Please note that if you are running for Students’ Council or the General Faculties Council, these signatures must be from students currently registered in your same Faculty. If you are running to represent Open Studies on these Councils, you are not required to provide signatures.

Bylaws

After the Signatures section of the nomination pack is a copy of all Bylaws associated with that election. These bylaws are rules that you and your volunteers will have to follow while campaigning, so be sure to read them over carefully.

The Fall By-Election is happening October 2-3, 2024, and you should definitely run to rep your Faculty! Nomination packs are due by 4:00 PM on September 23, and can either be submitted by email to the Governance Manager or printed and dropped off at 2-900 SUB!
