The University of Alberta Students’ Union has been made aware of a number of posters that were put up in the Students’ Union Building and at a number of other locations across campus. We have also learned of a pumpkin that was intentionally altered to have racist implications that was left near Pembina Hall, which houses the Faculty of Native Studies offices. The posters have since been removed from our building and we will ensure any additional unauthorized posters are also removed.
Acts of racism, white supremacy, and colonial violence will not be tolerated in our community. The diversity of our campus is a strength and is something the Students’ Union celebrates. Students are grateful to be able to gather on Treaty 6 territory – lands that have seen people gather for thousands of years. The Students’ Union recognizes the importance of respecting Canada’s treaties with First Nations, and we honour the nation-to-nation relationship we have with the Aboriginal members of our campus. The displays that were found on campus earlier this week are not only contrary to the spirit of reconciliation and are damaging to our entire community but are especially hurtful to Aboriginal students on campus who are our friends and our peers.
The Students’ Union remains committed to combatting racism and to ensuring our campus community is one that is inclusive and welcoming to all students, regardless of their identity. Our vision is that every student feels accepted and welcome on campus, is able to thrive in a vibrant intellectual community, is empowered and confident in their ability to succeed, and is able to contribute to the larger society as active citizens and effective leaders.
